The James & Janie Washington Foundation is dedicated to supporting emerging visual artists by providing them with time and space to create. The Foundation offers one-month residencies to artists living in Washington State. Artists will be provided with the equipment, space and technical assistance to make sculpture on a scale which might otherwise be unaffordable, in a setting conducive to experimentation. Artists will work in Washington’s historically significant house and studio in an environment that is both reflective and close to Seattle’s downtown experiences. The residency will be open to artists who work in all mediums, but who are interested in focusing on sculpture or installation art during their residency.

Residency Description
Residents are provided private studio space and opportunities to interact with Seattle’s vibrant art community while they complete a particular project. Through our residency program, we provide logistical support for the creation of artwork and help with artist involvement in community programs. We ask that each resident connect to the people of Seattle through at least one public program, based on their interests, goals and background. This could be a lecture, workshop, open studio or exhibit. The Foundation will work with the artist to set up the program during their residency.
There are two types of residencies that the Washington Foundation offers.

We are open to any project or medium that can be produced in a raw studio. We are particularly interested in artists whose work addresses issues of social justice and that would engage the communities in the neighborhood of the Central District or the City of Seattle. We will accept any achievable project plan by artists who demonstrate ambition, follow-though, and professionalism. Project plans should consider the unique history and space that James Washington’s studio offers.
The Foundation will work with Artist Trust to publish a call to artists within Washington State. We are hoping to reach out to communities of artists that normally do not attend residency programs. A panel of three artists will judge the artist’s applications and the Foundation will award the residencies based on their recommendations.
Residencies will be awarded and scheduled individually. Residencies must be scheduled for between June, 2012 to May, 2013. If accepted, we will send an offer letter that outlines how we propose to work with the artist. Stipends will be awarded at the beginning of each
