In 1990, the City of Seattle's Historic Landmarks and Preservation Board designated James Washington, Jr's Long time studio and home in the historically African American Central District "a culturally significant place." Later in 1997, a group of prominent citizens, along with Mr. and Mrs. Washington, formed the James & Janie Washington Jr. Foundation. This rich resource is indented to add scholarship to twentieth- Century American and Northwest art, and illuminate Washington's extraordinary creativity. The archives contain correspondence, sketchbooks, awards, poetry, photographs, video and audio recordings, and published and unpublished manuscripts. Washington's personal library of thousands of books and journals reflect the broad range of historic artistic and social interests. The Foundations programs follow James Washington's dedication to encouraging artist through its Artist in Residence Program.
