A BIRD IN THE HAND

This exhibition is a gift.  The James & Janie Washington Foundation is the recipient of the gift and you can participate.  A year ago an artist, Seth Friedman, came to the Director of the Foundation with a proposition: he would carve sculptures from stones collected by Seattle sculptor James Washington, sell the work and give 100% of the proceeds to the Foundation’s Artist in Residence Program.  Brian Balmert, owner of ORNAMO, a creative home furnishings store in Occidental Square, offered his retail space for the show that features the sculptures.

The resulting exhibition, entitled A Bird in the Hand, shows Friedman’s elegant sculptures within an unconventional mixture of James Washington’s expansive collection of everything.

Seth Friedman’s stone sculptures are on either side of the gallery on 18-foot fir slabs.  The cases and video installations throughout the gallery use artifacts from Mr. Washington’s collection to tell stories of his life and legacy.
